Robotic Institute of South Florida

The World of Surgery has Changed

Operations that used to require long hospital stays and even longer recoveries have been revolutionized by recent advances in robotic surgical technology.

That technology has come to the Robotic Institute of South Florida at Memorial Hospital Pembroke, in the form of the da Vinci® Surgical System.

This minimally invasive system is used at Memorial Hospital Pembroke for gynecological, urological, thoracic (chest) and some oncological (cancer) procedures. General surgical procedures using minimally invasive techniques will become available later in 2009.

The da Vinci system features robotic instruments – including tiny cameras – that are inserted into the patient through small openings in the skin. Sitting at a nearby console – and viewing the surgical site on a 3D, high-definition computer screen – the surgeon operates by controlling the robotic instruments, which respond precisely and accurately to the doctor’s commands.

With the da Vinci Surgical System, doctors can perform delicate and complex operations with more precision and control – while patients experience less pain, less scarring and a quicker recovery.
