Minimally Invasive Urological Procedures
Before, patients with prostate problems, bladder or kidney cancer, or kidney obstructions faced the possibility of painful surgeries, long recoveries, and unpredictable long-term incontinence and sexual dysfunction.
But now, those procedures can be performed with less pain and fewer side effects. In fact, minimally invasive surgical techniques are perfect for urologic procedures – which typically are very delicate due to the kidneys’ location near other vital organs and an important network of nerves.
Prostatectomy
Sometimes the prostate needs to be removed because of a cancer diagnosis. When the procedure, which is called a prostatectomy, is done with minimally invasive robotic instruments there are smaller incisions, a greater likelihood of no long-term side-effects, and improved cancer removal.
Nephrectomy
A nephrectomy is surgery performed to remove blockages or cancers in the kidney or to remove the kidneys themselves. Traditional kidney surgery typically involved a painful 6- to 8-inch “V” incision and a long recovery period afterwards. With minimally invasive robotics, kidney surgery will require only a few small incisions and a much shorter recovery time.
Cystectomy
Robotic instruments are used for cystectomies – the partial or complete removal of the bladder following a diagnosis of cancer. Robotic surgery is even better than older laparoscopic procedures because the robotic equipment’s range of motion is greater than that of the human wrist – giving the doctor better dexterity and control.
